Welcome to my Blog - Next Chapter

  • Welcome to my blog, TBI Wife Life, which I started in 2012 to share the highs and lows of being a caregiver to my spouse who has experienced a traumatic brain injury (TBI). When my husband had his accident in 2008, I searched endlessly for stories and experiences to prepare myself for what lay ahead. However, I struggled to find narratives that truly resonated with the severity of our situation. Determined to create a space for others in similar circumstances, I started this blog back in 2012 to provide insights into our journey towards a "new normal" and share practical tips for navigating life after TBI. When I first started my blog I wanted to document everything that I was experiencing and feeling at the time, and I’m glad I did.  The recounts I had from the first 4 years, before I started the blog, were from my handwritten journal. In the early posts you will find I reflect on the initial shock of my husband's accident and the daunting prospect of navigating life post-TBI.  Overnight, I found myself thrust into the role of caregiver, navigating a maze of medical appointments, rehabilitation therapies, and emotional upheaval. In addition to caring for my husband, I'm also a devoted mother, so I had to figure out balancing the needs of our family while striving to create a sense of normalcy amidst the chaos. Despite the challenges we faced, life after TBI is still filled with moments of joy and laughter. I always had so much hope and celebrated the small victories and we were still able to find happiness in everyday moments as a family. In 2022, I made the very difficult decision to move my husband into a Long Term Care Facility.   Caregiving is a noble yet demanding role that often consumes every aspect of one's life. For 14 years, I had dedicated myself to caring for my husband, sacrificing my own needs and aspirations in the process. However, through perseverance, self-discovery, and resilience, I found the strength to reclaim my life and rediscover my sense of purpose and freedom. My journey from caregiver to reclaiming my life has been filled with challenges, growth, and ultimately, liberation. By prioritizing self-care, embracing personal growth, and honouring my own needs and aspirations, I've found the strength to take back control of my life and pursue my dreams with renewed passion and purpose. Returning to my blog after many years of very limited activity is something I am very passionate about at this stage of caregiving and healing.  My hope is that my story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for those navigating their own caregiving journey, reminding them that reclaiming their lives is not only possible but a courageous act of self-love and empowerment. Whether you're a fellow caregiver seeking support and solidarity or someone curious about the realities of life after TBI, I invite you to join me on new this journey.
